I'v been using my new yellow Safari all week. It writes beautifully, is light and comfortable to hold. And fun. It might just be perfect.

XF Nib is a little toothy |

The XF nib on the Safaris lay down a beautifully thin line, but can be a little scratchy on some cheaper papers. If smooth is your thing, go with a wider nib. I've also got a medium and it's smooth as silk.
This doesn't detract from the pen at all though. I still use my XF yellow Safari all the time.

The bulletproof wonder |

A pen meant to be used, abused then used again. Some might not like the radical clip but as with everything from the triangular grip to the little tabs to line up the converter it is a pen to write with. Good for throwing in a backpack or just taking to work. Not expensive enough to worry about and robust enough to hand to a FP newbie to try.

A modern standard |

The Lamy Safari is a pen that does it right - it's lightweight, made of tough and scratch-resistant ABS plastic, a smooth-writing, replaceable nib, a cool looking and very functional wire pocket clip, and it takes cartridges or converters. Designwise, it's "industrial, yet elegant". This is not a retro pen. It's a modern classic, an everyday tool to be used at work, the classroom or writing the next big novel. And it's quite reasonably priced, unlike some of the expensive fountain pens that users may find too precious to use on a daily basis. My favorite is the yellow; it's so bright, no way am I going to forget and leave it behind. The aluminum bodied Lamy All-Star and clear ABS Vista use the same feeds & nibs. It's tough enough to let kids use, yet refined enough to encourage your best efforts at writing.
